I watched the movie The Theory of Everything yesterday. (It's about the life of Stephen Hawking)
Synopsis: (in my own words)
It starts out with Stephen away at a prestigious college, developing his theories of quantum physics & slowly starting to experience the symptoms of Lou Gehrigs disease. In the interim, he meets a girl & they fall in love...all this time, having no idea that he has a disease & ignoring the symptoms, he ends up in the hospital where his doctor tells him that he has two years to live. He pushed his friends & the love of his life away, but she won't leave him. Despite his grim diagnosis & short life expectancy, she declares her love & they decide to wed. During all of this, he continues to grow & develop his theories of black holes, while his body withers away. Over time, he loses the ability to do more than speak & operate his wheelchair. Thankfully, his mind is still in tact. He is brilliant & very well read, continuing to write his book & starts receiving praise for his theory. He was ecstatic. In the background, his wife gives birth & cares for three children, also while caring for him full-time. She struggles with balancing her responsibilities as a mother, wife & caregiver. She gives her all to Stephen & when he lands in a coma & a tracheotomy is the only option, he loses his ability to speak. In a nut shell, he gets really famous & his book sells millions & millions of copies. He travels the world, speaking at various engagements about his theories. He is praised world-wide.
Cons:
- It's a long movie!
- Actor's were hard to understand! Their accents & lack of enunciation left me in the dark for the first 20 minutes.
- A story of perseverance
- His wife's demonstration of devout faith
- No sexual content
- No bad language
- Overall uplifting message
- Happy ending (all things considered)
Overall thoughts:
This was so hard to watch because it was so sad! I do like that even though the movie was about Stephen, it spend a good deal of time focused on his wife & her coping with his disease. I really felt for her. I cannot imagine what she went through. I was impressed because of her perseverance & determination to make life better for him. I appreciate that she fought for him, even though it would have been easier to give up. Overall, I thought it was well done & very thought-provoking.
My rating:
